Among the many talented potters who have come from Tokoname are INA Choza I,
AKAI Tozen I,and KAMIMURA Hakuo who were prominent in the nineteenth century,
and KOIE Hoju who achieved the first mass production of clay pipes during the
same period. a great many modern potters and ceramicists have continued this
tradition in a wide range of productive activites. Some young ceramists
jointly made the ceramic bench which was displayed at Expo'70,held in Osaka,
while others won the Grand Prix at the Biennale Internationale de Ceramique
d'Art held in Vallauris,France. These achievements have helped to spread the
fame of Tokoname worldwide.
There have been six honorary citizens of Tokoname-the late INA Chozaburo,the
first mayor, the late HISADA Keizo,the third mayor,the late TANIKAWA Tetsuzo,
philosopher,the late IWATA Kazuo, the senior advisor of Toshiba Corporation,
HIRAIWA Gaishi, the senior advisor of the Tokyo Electric Power company, and
MORITA Akio, the ex-chairman of SONY Corpolation.These people are the pride
of Tokoname-and representatives of the culture and economy of Japan.
